Avocado Heart Girl
When David turns 11, he dreams of having the perfect birthday. But like every other year, his sister Leanne takes all the attention due to her disability. This year feels even more overwhelming as Leanne prepares for another operation. Her condition has not only shaped David’s home life but also his experience at school, where other children are scared of her, tease him, and leave him feeling isolated. There is no escape from a world that constantly revolves around Leanne.
All David wants is a birthday that is his, and for his dad to show up and take him out.
Everything begins to shift when David forms an unlikely friendship with his neighbour, Ethan, who is struggling with his own identity after being expelled from school for wearing mascara. Both boys feel misunderstood and rejected, and through their friendship, they begin to find comfort in being themselves.
As David escapes into his imagination, we see the life he wishes for, one where he is finally noticed. Meanwhile, his mum Maureen, doing her best as a single parent, is caught between caring for Leanne and trying to provide for her family, unaware of how unseen David feels.
