KLIPIST UNIVERSITY : BULLET TIME 🕰

OOOOOFT. Last week we brought you the zooming in whilst zooming out mindbend that is the dolly zoom, so continuing that theme, we are now zoning in on the dolly's rock n roll distant cousin from another galaxy... BULLET TIME.

Less a camera trick, more a feat of cinematography realised by hundreds of cameras guided by computer simulation - oh and a brilliant actor in there somewhere too.

In essence, Bullet Time is really simple. The subject is slowed right down, whilst the shot panning around the subject moves in real time.

But realising this shot is far from simple. Scenes are built first of all by computer simulations to determine the timing sequence. Scenes are then shot through rigs made up of hundreds of cameras, with multiple and varying frame rates.

1999's Matrix used this technique to great effect - not just with Neo's infamous scene, but with many scenes throughout the trilogy. The effect of time slowing down gives us the feeling that we're not in reality at all, but instead in an alternate reality where we see everything around us with crystal clarity. This cinematic effect puts us, the audience, into this alternate reality. This is when we see the Matrix like Neo does.

Nowadays, drones and cameras like the Insta360 make this trick accessible to the masses. You can 'Bullet Time' a selfie on a boat with a device that fits in your pocket. Fancy that.

But, think back 22 years ago to the release of the Matrix. Shots like this required complex graphic simulators, ridiculously expensive camera rigs and some incredible thinking - thinking that led to some of the most jaw dropping moments in cinema, and allowed for amazing advancements in film technology.
